Japanese chart positions
I think a note of explanation is in order regarding the quoted Japanese
chart positions and why they seem so low relative to how popular Queen
were in Japan through the 1970s and early 1980s. There are no 'official'
charts in Japan (the equivalent to Billboard/Music Week/BBC) and so
there are a variety of different charts. One chart (as quoted here) is
published by a Japanese
music magazine and this chart tends to be dominated by domestic music as most
Japanese people prefer to buy albums rather than singles.
So, Queen singles do not do so well in terms of highest position, though the
number of weeks on the chart gives you a good indication of the popularity of
the song. There is also an FM-radio chart based on
listeners requests and most Queen songs from Keep Yourself Alive to Staying
Power did very well in this chart, most getting to number one.
Thanks to Tadao Ishimi for the Japanese chart information.
